YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick Review

I was recently given the opportunity to test out two complimentary YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipsticks thanks to Inlfluenster. I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive them in the mail and couldn’t wait to rip open the package as soon as it arrived.
According to the YSL’s description of the product, these lipsticks are supposed to give rich, luxurious color in just one stroke and give intense hydration and antioxidant care. It contains ingredients such as rosemary and carrot extract for moisturizing and conditioning the lips and yeast extract for supporting natural cell turnover. The colors sent to me were #9 Rose Stiletto (berry rose) and #19 Fuschia (bright fuschia pink). So, without further ado, here are my honest thoughts and experience with the Rouge Pur Couture Lipsticks.

The Good:

Packaging: Right off the bat, I was mesmerized and impressed with the luxurious metallic gold packaging. The rectangular tube is advantageous to the typical round lipstick tubes because it doesn’t roll around everywhere and the lid closes on securely, so there’s no need to worry about the lid popping off in your purse.

Application: The lipsticks have a nice, light rose fragrance to them that eventually fades after application. I was very impressed with the texture and pigmentation of the lipsticks. Both of the lipsticks I’ve received were satin finishes, incredibly soft, luxuriously creamy, and very comfortable to wear. I have very chapped lips, so I usually need to apply a lip balm before applying any sort of lipstick to keep them from drying up. For testing purposes, I skipped the lip balm and was delighted to find that my lips still felt moisturized hours after application.

Longevity: This is one of the few lipsticks I’ve tried with remarkable staying power and I didn’t have to worry about it wearing off throughout the day in weird patches. In my experience, lipsticks either wear off completely or leave an unflattering outline of color around my lips. So, you can imagine my surprise when I checked the mirror after eating lunch only to find that, while the lipstick’s creaminess had worn off, it had stained my lips and still looked  good.
Large Selection: There are over 50 shades available in satin and matte finishes in variations of YSL’s iconic colors – red, orange, fuschia, and nude. You can find a large selection at Sephora, or shop the full collection on YSL’s website.

The Bad:

Price: As expected, these are quite expensive with prices at $36 a pop. If I had never tried these before, I would have a hard time justifying the purchase. After experiencing for myself the absolute quality of not only the lipstick itself but also the packaging, I am definitely looking forward to splurging on my next YSL lipstick.

Final Thoughts:

I have to admit, I had extremely high expectations for the lipsticks before testing it out. For $36 each, these better be hands-down the best lipstick I have ever tried and it better leave me absolutely floored. It was and it did. I’m not saying you need to go out and buy these right this instant because there’s still a ton of great lipsticks out there that are more affordable. But, if you’re looking to splurge on a high quality, highly pigmented, long-lasting, comfortable, and an absolutely stunning lipstick, then yes, you should definitely give this one a shot.

Review: Cover FX Custom Cover Drops

Cover FX Custom Cover Drops 1

Many of you may already be familiar with the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops. It’s been raved about on YouTube and blogs as a revolutionary and versatile product —a real game changer. I gave in to the hype and had to see for myself how amazing these drops really were.

I was originally intrigued by customizable coverage and finish. Based on the chosen base (any serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, BB cream, sunscreen, etc), you can opt for a dewy, natural, or even matte finish.  The coverage can also be customized to your liking based on how many drops are used. According to the Cover FX website, 1 drop gives you sheer coverage and it can be built up to complete coverage with just 4 drops.

In my experience 1 drop was way too sheer to even be called sheer coverage. 2 drops gives slight coverage but still remains very natural as it doesn’t hide your skin and imperfections. Anything above 2 drops is medium-to-full coverage.

One of my favorite ways to use the drops is to mix it with current foundations that are now too dark for me. I only need to mix 1 or 2 drops to get the perfect shade or neutralize foundations that are too pink.

*For reference I am an NC 20-25 and the G20 is too light. (The swatches look very dark but I promise it matches my face!)

Left to Right: Custom Cover Drops (G20), MAC Pro Longwear (NC25), Dior Forever (Linen), NARS All Day Weightless Luminous (Santa Fe), Revlon Colorstay Whipped (200 Sand Beige)

There are endless mix and match possibilities and I’ve experimented… A LOT. I’ve found that gel-based lotions or primers don’t work as well with the drops because it tends to sheer out the coverage.

Gel v Cream
Both are compared using 2 drops | Left: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel | Right: Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation Creme

Using cream-based moisturizers and primers did help with the overall finish, but I noticed a lot of separation on my T-Zone after only a couple of hours of wear. Granted, I have combination to oily skin, but I did expect for it to hold up better.

The Custom Cover Drops comes with a dropper, which makes it easy to control the amount of product being used, but it creates a huge mess around the rim of bottle. The product builds up around the rim and oozes out every time you twist the lid back on. Looking at the pictures, you can see the product build-up and what happens after twisting the cap back on. It gets all over the bottle, your hands, and frankly, it’s a big waste of product.

The price point is steep for .5 oz of product, as opposed to the typical 1 oz in foundations. The justification in this, however, is that it’s concentrated pigment and is meant to be used sparingly (literally 1-4 drops at a time). I’ve used this almost daily for several months now and I don’t see myself running out any time soon.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • Can be used to adjust shade of current foundations
  • Can skip the foundation step in your routine
  • Lightweight — Doesn’t feel like you’re wearing any makeup
  • Customizable coverage and finish
  • Wide shade range
  • Extremely messy packaging
  • Separation/Short wear-time
  • Price

Custom Cover Drops Final Thoughts

Overall, I don’t regret my purchase but I’m also not impressed with the product.  I’ve read reviews from people who had better experiences (and it looked absolutely gorgeous on them), but for me, it just didn’t live up to the hype. While I do enjoy the convenience and potential of the Cover Drops, the wear and finish just don’t compare to my favorite foundations! Let me know how you use the Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops!

Travel Makeup Essentials

Summer is among us and many of us take this time to get away from our everyday lives to sight-see and lounge by the beach. The idea of vacationing is exciting, except when the only thing between you and the beach is the daunting task of packing. I especially have a hard time condensing my makeup down to the essentials (I once ended up taking three different foundations!). Throughout the years, I’ve learned to hone down my travel makeup essentials to a few must-haves. Some of which I will be sharing with you today.

Urban Decay Naked Basics

Left to Right: Venus, Foxy, W.O.S., Naked 2, Faint, Crave
Left to Right: Venus, Foxy, W.O.S., Naked 2, Faint, Crave

The Naked Basics palette is perfect for travel because of its slim and compact size. Smaller than an iPhone 6, it requires minimal space in your makeup bag, but still provides you with a mirror and 6 eyeshadows that are great for both daytime and nighttime looks. Some of these shadows can also serve dual purposes, which means you can pack fewer things! Pop some Venus on the tops of your cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose for a fresh glow. Fill in sparse brows with Naked 2 and Faint, as they are great brow powder substitutes. For a softer and more natural look, line your eyes with Crave, a matte black!

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

Radiant Creamy Concealer is one of my all-time favorite concealers. I love taking this with me when I travel because of its multi-functionality. It’s creamy and blendable with medium-to-high coverage that works well on blemishes, hyper-pigmentation, under the eyes, and it also doubles as an eyeshadow primer. On days when I don’t feel like wearing a full face of makeup, I cover my blemishes with this concealer and lightly powder to set. That way, I still get the coverage I need without the heavy feeling of wearing a foundation!

Anastasia Brow Wiz Pencil

Brow Wiz makes eyebrow maintenance very minimal and ridiculously easy. This is great for when you’re on the go because you don’t need any other tools or brushes for application. Brow Wiz has a mechanical pencil on one side and a spooley on the other!

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Exposed

The Amazonian Clay Blush in Exposed is a beautiful matte, nude pink that looks very natural on the skin and is versatile with several makeup looks and skin tones. The star ingredient, Amazonian Clay, is great for minimizing oil, improving the longevity of wear, and keeping the skin hydrated.

Diorskin Forever Compact

Diorskin Forever is a silky smooth and luxurious powder that blends seamlessly into the skin for a satin matte finish.  Because it is so finely milled, it gives a naturally flawless look that isn’t cakey. The compact conveniently comes with a large mirror and a sponge applicator, perfect for travel or carrying in your purse for quick touch ups.

Benefit Hoola Bronzer

The matte Hoola bronzer gives a natural warmth that is perfect for an all-over bronze or contouring. Its soft texture makes it easily blendable and the light brown color leans a bit cool-toned which means, no orange fake tan look!

Dupe: NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Powder – Sunny

Revlon Color Stay Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain

Just Bitten balm stain is hands down one of my favorite drugstore products. It’s a long-lasting lip balm that moisturizes your lips and leaves a soft stain (available in 12 different colors). The color “Honey” is especially a favorite of mine because it’s suitable for everyday use and leaves a beautiful rosy-pink tint after the balm has worn off. I find this ideal for travel because it’s one of those products you can apply and forget about, but still looks fantastic.

Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation

When you’re out and about, the last thing anyone wants to worry about are touch ups. Hourglass Immaculate is my go-to foundation for travel. I have a very oily t-zone and this is the only thing that will last through the heat, humidity, and a long day of exploring. This seriously weightless foundation has buildable medium-to-full coverage and uniquely dries to a powder, so you can expect minimal oil and long wear time. The velvet matte finish does accentuate dry patches, so make sure you are well moisturized and exfoliated before applying!

  • Avoid packing bulky foundation bottles by pumping the amount you will need into a contact case!

  • Save your sample-sized eyeliners, mascaras, lipsticks, bronzers, and primers for travel! It’s a great way to bring some of your favorite products without the extra bulk!
